Women comics/ Pretty Deadly, Diary of a Dominatrix

I really enjoyed reading Pretty Deadly in class. The color pallet was mesmerizing, the line work had a real gritty feel the played well with the western tone. I found it interesting that I wouldn’t have necessarily pegged this author as female. It really did a good job of conveying the flavor of a western, and the pacing fit very good with this. I found myself very surprised by Diary of a Dominatrix. I did not think that I would have liked it as nearly as much as I did. I really liked the art style, especially how the eyes and hair were drawn. The format its self that was built to resemble an instructional book felt very fresh to me. I liked how on some pages the objects would be scattered around, it felt very free and organic. I thought that the techniques for shading were also very cool, not a lot of the comics through this course seemed to employ cross hatching variations. The piece as a whole felt very playful, using paper doll pages and step by step tutorials. I also liked how the boyfriend was included, it gave insight to a different part of the character, rounding her out in a way. It also felt that it cleared up some misconceptions about the profession in a way. She felt more playful and happier in the panels where he was introduced. Throughout this course I have found a lot of different things that I enjoy that I would never have thought to read before, this being a great example.

This week was a very interesting one because I had not had any previous experience with the content of underground comics. I was surprised to find that I enjoyed parts of the Tits and Clits comics. Over all this one felt different from the other samples, almost tamer in a way. While still very explicit, the content behind the explicitness was less predatory, making it a more comfortable read. I also liked how there was a Varity of styles included in the issues, each with their own way of pushing their drawing styles to extremes. The stories felt like they were written to relate to woman, and often seemed to have more emotionally centered segments where we the reader are inside of the character’s head. Other underground comics seemed to be more centered on shock value, slapstick, and confrontations between characters and opposed to these more interment moments. The Night Circus i had actually picked up this book earlier but had not found time to read it until this class. the writing style felt very fresh and almost exotic to the tongue. i really loved how Morgenstern crafted her sentences, the linguistic embellishments really helped add to the mystical feel of the novel. i also liked how the author split the narrative between the two characters to display how differently they are raised.    both grow up in a well off way, yet the social aspects of their development are completely different. Celia travels via the backstage, learning from an active performer (her father) and exposed to large crowds.  Marco on the other hand is raised in almost complete isolation with the exception of trips with his teacher.yet despite the vast difference each grows very powerful (weather through books or pain), showing that both methods are indeed effectual.    the author also writes n such a way that the reader feels included, adding...

I Live With You This was a very neat piece of writing because of the point of view it is told from. in fact the writer is careful to make sure we never know quite who is talking to us, whether it is a manifestation of mental making or an actual being. this is what drives the readers curiosity.    i really liked how the author used so many things that we have all experienced to make this secret character come to life. by blaming common place actions on this creation the author keeps the readers attention; we have experienced these things before, is the author going to tell us what has been causing them? things like misplacing objects or tripping over nothing are relateble to the average reader an therefore a safe thing for the author to extort.    while reading i found myself postulating on whether the this being was actually supposed to be within the character. that we all have a sort of split personality where a part of us pushes the other out of its comfort...
